Case IH 5150 Maxxum Troubleshooting

The Case IH 5150 is a two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive farm tractor from Maxxum series. This model was manufactured between 1992 and 1997. The Case IH Maxxum 5150 tractor is powered by 359 cu.in (5.9 L) Cummins 6T-590 6-cylinder direct injection turbocharged diesel engine with a rated power of 132 hp (98.4 kW).

The Case IH Maxxum 5150 is fitted with a two transmission options: powershift transmission with 16 forward and 12 reverse gears, or creeper transmission with 24 forward and 20 reverse gears. The maximum travel speed (forward/reverse): 24.9 mph (40 km/h) and 13.7 mph (22 km/h).

The open center hydraulic system has a gear pump with a rated capacity of 20.7 gpm (78.3 lpm). The hydraulic system pressure is 190 bar (2755 psi). The 2WD models are equipped with 16.9R24 front tires and 18.4R38 rear tires. The 380/70R28 front tires and 520/70R38 rear tires are used for 4WD tractors. The wheelbase is 101.8 in (2580 mm).

Diesel Engine Troubleshooting
Engine starts up hard or will not start

Air in fuel system - Bleed fuel system.
Dirty fuel filter - Service or replace the filter.
Defective injection nozzle - Inspect nozzles and replace if necessary.
Water or dirt in fuel system - Drain, flush, and service the system.
Improper valve clearance - Need to adjust valve clearance.
Fuel injection pump damage - Install a new fuel pump or repair.

Engine stalls after starting

Restricted intake air - Clean air cleaner element.
Dirty fuel filter - Clean the filter element.
Problems with fuel injection pump tightness - Inspect fuel injection pump for leaks.
Clogged or defective injectors - Test and replace fuel injectors if necessary.
Fuel injection pump damage - Repair or install a new fuel pump.

Engine shuts off while running

Engine is cold - Engine is not warmed up to the required temperature.
Fuel filter plugged - Clean or change the filter.
Air in the fuel lines - Bleed the fuel lines.
Defective or clogged injection nozzle - Clean or replace injection nozzles.
Improper setting of fuel injection pump timing - Adjust the pump as required.

Engine stalling at idle

Incorrect low idle speed adjustment - Adjust low idle speed.
Fuel injection pump malfunction - Change or repair the pump.
Damaged or clogged injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Excessive valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance.

Poor engine power

Air filter plugged - Service or replace the air filter.
Fuel injection nozzles are damaged or dirty - Change fuel injection nozzles.
Incorrect fuel injection pressure - Adjust pressure to proper level.
Valve clearance is wrong - Check and adjust.
Low idle speed set incorrectly - Normalize low idle speed.
Fuel lines or hoses are clogged - Clean fuel lines and hoses.
Cylinder head gasket is blown - Change cylinder head gasket.
Leaking or defective piston rings - Replace the piston rings as required.

Engine overheats

Coolant level is low - The cooling system needs to be refilled and checked for faults.
Lack of engine oil - Need to add engine oil.
Radiator core is clogged or radiator cap is leaking - Change cap or clean radiator.
Fan belt is loose or defective - Belt change is required.
Engine overload - Reduce load on the engine.

Oil pressure too low

Not enough oil in the engine - Fill up the engine oil.
Engine oil filter is plugged - Change or service engine oil filter.
Incorrect oil viscosity - Use the specified type of engine oil.
Crankshaft bearing has incorrect oil clearance - Replace bearings.
Worn oil pump - Replace as required.

Engine noises or knocks

Not enough engine oil - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Engine is not warmed up to the required temperature - Normalize the temperature by warming up the engine.
Timing of fuel injection pump is incorrect - Set the fuel pump timing correctly.
Too low idle RPM - Correct low idle adjustment.
Dirty or defective injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
Connecting rod is not aligned or defective - Align or change connecting rod.
Worn or broken pistons - Install new pistons.

Transmission Troubleshooting
Low transmission oil pressure

Lack of transmission oil supply - Fill up the transmission oil.
Dirty transmission fluid filter element (if equipped) - Service or change transmission fluid filter.
Relief valve malfunction - Install a new relief valve.

Transmission is excessively noisy

Insufficient transmission oil - Fill up the transmission oil.
Transmission oil is dirty - Change the oil.
Gears are damaged or backlash is incorrect - Install new gears and adjust backlash properly.
Bearings are broken or worn - Change the bearings.
Damaged or worn gear shift forks - Change defective shift forks.
Worn or damaged shaft splines - Shaft need to be changed.

Gear hard to shift

Stuck or worn gear shift linkage - Lubricate or replace shift linkage.
Shift forks are worn or bent - Replace the shift forks.
Worn out parts of the gearshift mechanism - Replace worn parts.
Clutch is out of adjustment or defective - Change or adjust clutch.

Transmission fluid leakage

High transmission fluid level - Drain the excess fluid.
Worn seals or gaskets - Install new gaskets or seal.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting
Hydraulic oil pressure is low

Hydraulic oil level low - Fill the system to proper hydraulic oil level.
Clogged hydraulic fluid filter - Replace hydraulic filter element or service if necessary.
Defective hydraulic pump - Replace or repair hydraulic oil pump.
Not adjusted hydraulic spool valve - Need to adjust spool valve.
Defective hydraulic cylinder - Install a new hydraulic cylinder or repair it.
Leaking hydraulic lines - Inspect hydraulic system for leaks and repair it.

Hydraulic system is too hot

Main relief valve is faulty - Change relief valve.
Hydraulic fluid type is wrong - Use correct type of hydraulic fluid.
Hydraulic oil is dirty - Hydraulic oil change required.
Air trapped in hydraulic system - Bleed air from system.

3-point hitch won't lift or lifts slowly

Excessive hitch loading - The load should be reduced.
Hydraulic oil level low - Need to add oil.
Hydraulic oil filter is clogged - Hydraulic filter maintenance required.
Hydraulic pump is faulty - Install a new hydraulic oil pump.
Main relief valve is faulty - Install a new relief valve.
Hydraulic spool valve is damaged - Install a new hydraulic valve or repair it.
Defective hydraulic cylinder - Install a new hydraulic cylinder or repair it.
Suction line is disconnected or broken - Replace or connect correctly.

Hitch cannot be lowered or lowering is too slowly

Hydraulic control valve block is not set properly - Use the proper setting.
Hydraulic cylinder is faulty - Install a new hydraulic cylinder or repair it.
Unadjusted hitch - Adjust the hitch.
Hitch rock shaft is damaged - Install a new shaft.

3-point hitch jerks when lower or lift

Air in hydraulic system - Bleed air from hydraulic system.
Hydraulic fluid is contaminated - Fill up with new hydraulic fluid.
Hydraulic pump not working - Repair or replace hydraulic oil pump.
Damaged hydraulic spool valve - Repair or change hydraulic valve.
Broken hydraulic cylinder - Replace or repair hydraulic cylinder.

Steering System Troubleshooting
Hard Steering

Incorrectly fitted or worn steering column - Refit or replace the steering column.
Air trapped inside steering system - Need to bleed air.
Not adjusted toe-in - Adjust toe-in wheels.
Tyre pressure is uneven - Adjust the tyre pressure.
Steering pump failure - Replace or repair steering pump.
Steering pump control valve is stuck or worn - Replace or clean flow control valve.
Low steering oil level - Fill up the steering oil.

Excessive play in steering

Worn steering column shaft or coupling - Change faulty component.
Steering pump stopped working - Install a new steering pump.
Worn or loose steering linkage assembly - Check and replace as required.

Front wheels wander to right or left

Uneven wear on front tyres - Replace the tyres.
Incorrect toe-in - Check toe-in and correct.
Steering linkage assembly is worn or loose - Check and change as required.
Improperly adjusted or defective front wheel bearings - Replace the bearings or adjust it properly.

Electrical System Troubleshooting
Battery will not charge

Corroded or loose cable connections - Tighten or service connections.
Faulty battery terminal clamps - Replace terminal clamps.
Battery is defective - Battery replacement required.
Worn or loose belt - Adjust belt tension or install a new belt.

Starter motor turns slow

Battery voltage is low - Charge the battery.
Battery will not hold charge - Service battery or replace it.
Bad terminals or disconnected battery cables - Check cable connections and change or clean terminals.

Starter motor won't turn

Battery is low or faulty - Change or recharge battery.
Battery cables are disconnected or improperly connected - Inspect cables and connect properly.
Low battery capacity - Low battery charging, charge as required.
Faulty starter motor - Starter needs to be changed.
