Case IH 844 XL Troubleshooting

The Case IH 844 XL utility tractor was manufactured between 1985 and 1987. This tractor is powered by International Harvester D-268 4-cylinder liquid-cooled 5 L displacement diesel engine with a maximum power of 80 hp (59.7 kW) and 296 Nm (218 lb-ft) of peak torque at 1300 rpm.

The Case IH 844 XL fitted with 2 transmission options: 16-speed range IH total-synchron transmission (16x8), or 8-speed range transmission (8x4). Max. travel speed (forward/reverse): 18.6 mph (30 kph) and 10.8 mph (17.5 kph).

The open center hydraulic system used a gear pump with a rated capacity of 8.7 gallons per minute (33 l/min). The hydraulic pressure is 175 bar (2540 psi). The front tires are 7.50x18 (2-wheel drive) and 12.4R24 (4-wheel drive). The rear tire size: 16.9R34. The wheel base is 94.1" (2390 mm) for 2WD models and 92.5" (2340 mm) for 4WD models.

Engine Troubleshooting
Engine hard to start or will not start

Air in the fuel pipes - Bleed the fuel pipes.
Clogged fuel filter - Service the filter.
Fuel injection nozzles are damaged or dirty - Service or change injection nozzles.
Water or dirt in fuel system - Drain, flush, and service the system.
Excessive valve clearance - Correct valve clearance needs to be set.
Fuel injection pump failure - Replace or rebuild injection pump.

Diesel starts and stalls immediately

Clogged air filter - Clean or change.
Fuel filter element is clogged - Service the filter.
Poor fuel injection pump tightness - Look for any leaks of fuel pump Tighten it fast.
Clogged or defective injectors - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Defective fuel injection pump - Replace or rebuild injection pump.

Engine stops running suddenly

Engine is cold - Normalize the temperature by warming up the engine.
Fuel filter plugged - Service the filter.
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.
Fuel injection nozzles fault - Change fuel injection nozzles.
Improper fuel injection timing - Adjust according to specifications.

Engine stops when idling

Low idle speed adjustment is incorrect - Correct low idle settings.
Damaged fuel injection pump - Repair or install a new fuel pump.
Dirty or defective injectors - Clean fuel injectors or change it.
Improper valve clearance - Have it adjusted.

Poor engine power

Air filter is dirty - Change air filter element.
Fuel injection nozzles are clogged or faulty - If necessary, replace with a new nozzle.
Fuel injection pressure is wrong - Correct the pressure settings.
Improper valve clearance - Correct valve clearance needs to be set.
Low idle speed setting is not correct - Adjust the low idle speed.
Dirt in the fuel lines or hoses - Fuel hoses and lines must be clean.
Damaged cylinder-head gasket - Cylinder-head gasket replacement required.
Piston rings are worn or damaged - Replace the piston rings as required.

Engine is overheated

Engine has a lack of coolant - Fill radiator to proper level and check components for faults.
Not enough engine oil - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Damaged radiator cap or dirty radiator core - Change cap or clean radiator.
Broken or loose fan belt - Change the fan belt.
Engine overload - Reduce engine load.

Low oil pressure

Not enough oil in the engine - Fill crankcase to proper oil level.
Dirty oil filter - Clean or replace engine oil filter element.
Different type of engine oil - Use proper viscosity oil.
Incorrect oil clearance in crankshaft bearing - Change bearings.
Oil pump is worn or damaged - Install a new pump.

Engine knocking sound or abnormal noise

Insufficient engine oil - Add oil to the engine crankcase.
Engine is cold - Warm up the engine.
Fuel injection pump timing is not adjusted - Use the correct fuel injection pump timing adjustment.
Incorrect low idle speed adjustment - Test and adjust.
Fuel injector fault - Replace or clean fuel injectors.
Connecting rod failure or misalignment - Need to replace or align the connecting rod.
Broken or worn pistons - Pistons need to be replaced.

Transmission Troubleshooting
Transmission oil pressure is insufficient

Insufficient transmission fluid - Add fluid to the transmission housing.
Transmission oil filter element clogging (if equipped) - Clean or replace the transmission filter.
Stuck relief valve - Install a new valve.

Transmission noise

Lack of transmission oil supply - Fill up the transmission oil.
Transmission oil is contaminated - Transmission oil change required.
Improper backlash or worn gears - Change the gears or set backlash properly.
Worn or damaged bearings - Change faulty bearings.
Worn or bent shift forks - Change the shift forks.
Worn or stuck shaft splines - Shaft need to be changed.

Hard shifting

Stuck or worn gear shift linkage - Shift linkage need to be replaced.
Worn or bent gear shift forks - Change defective shift forks.
Worn out parts of the gearshift mechanism - Replace worn parts.
Clutch is out of adjustment or defective - Replace or adjust clutch.

Transmission oil leakage

Transmission fluid level is high - Correct the fluid level.
Damaged seals or gaskets - Seals and gaskets need to be replaced.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting
Insufficient hydraulic fluid pressure

Insufficient hydraulic oil - Need to add oil.
Clogged hydraulic fluid filter - Clean or change hydraulic filter.
Faulty hydraulic pump - Repair or replace hydraulic oil pump.
Not adjusted hydraulic control valve - Need to adjust.
Damaged hydraulic cylinder - Repair or replace hydraulic cylinder.
Leaks in hydraulic pipes - Inspect the system for leaks and fix it.

Hydraulic system overheating

Main relief valve failure - Relief valve replacement required.
Incorrect type of hydraulic oil - The correct type of oil must be used.
Contaminated hydraulic oil - Change hydraulic oil.
There is air in the hydraulic system - Bleed hydraulic system.

Hitch not raising or hitch raises slowly

Excessive hitch loading - Load needs to be reduced.
Hydraulic oil level low - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.
Clogged hydraulic oil filter - Clean the hydraulic filter or install new filter element.
Faulty hydraulic pump - Repair or replace hydraulic fluid pump.
Main relief valve malfunctioning - Relief valve must be changed.
Faulty hydraulic spool valve - Repair or replace hydraulic valve.
Hydraulic cylinder not working - Repair or install a new hydraulic cylinder.
Loose or broken suction line - Tighten the pipe or replace it.

3-point hitch can't drop or drops too slowly

Hydraulic control valve block is out of adjustment - Control valve needs to be adjusted.
Broken hydraulic cylinder - Install a new hydraulic cylinder or repair it.
Three-point hitch has not been adjusted - Adjustment is required.
Hitch cross shaft is worn - Change the shaft.

Hitch drop or lift is jerky

Air in hydraulic system - Bleed air from hydraulic system.
Hydraulic fluid contamination - Change hydraulic fluid.
Hydraulic pump not working - Repair or replace hydraulic oil pump.
Defective hydraulic control valve - Repair or change hydraulic valve.
Hydraulic cylinder is defective - Repair or replace hydraulic cylinder.

Steering System Troubleshooting
Steering is stiff

Improperly assembled or defective steering column - Reassemble or change the steering column.
Air in steering hydraulic system - Air-bleed steering system.
Incorrect toe-in - Adjust toe-in properly.
Front tyres wear unevenly - Change the tyres.
Defective hydraulic steering pump - Install a new steering pump.
Faulty or stuck pump flow control valve - Install a new flow control valve or clean it.
Not enough steering fluid - Fill up steering fluid to required level.

Excessive steering wheel free play

Steering column coupling or shaft has maximum wear - Replace defective component.
Steering pump is worn - Check the hydraulic steering pump and change if necessary.
Steering linkage components are loose or worn - Check and change as required.

Tractor pulls to left or right

Uneven tyre pressure - Inflate the tyres properly.
Not adjusted toe-in - Check and adjust toe-in.
Loose or worn steering linkage parts - Check and replace as required.
Front wheel bearings are defective or improperly adjusted - Adjust correctly or change bearings.

Electrical System Troubleshooting
Battery cannot be charged

Corroded or loose electrical wire connections - Tighten or service connections.
Faulty battery terminal clamps - Change terminal clamps.
Dead cell in battery - Replace the battery.
Belt is damaged or loose - Replace belt or adjust belt tension.

Starter turns slow

Low battery capacity - Recharge the battery.
Battery won’t hold charge - Battery needs to be serviced or replaced.
Corroded battery terminals or disconnected wires - Check battery wires and service or replace terminals.

Starter doesn't crank

Battery is drained or defective - Battery needs to be recharged or replaced.
Wiring harness is disconnected or improperly connected - Check wiring harness and connect as required.
Low battery power - Recharge the battery.
Defective starter motor - Starter should be changed.
