Case IH MX200 Magnum Troubleshooting

The Case IH MX 200 is a 2WD or 4WD row-crop tractor from Magnum series. This model was manufactured between 1999 and 2002. The components of Case IH MX200 powerline system: a 505 cubic inches (8.3 L) Cummins 6CTA-8.3 six-cylinder turbocharged intercooled diesel engine with a rated power of 220 hp (164.1 kW), and full power shift transmission with 18 forward and 4 reverse gears, or creeper transmission with 24 forward and 6 reverse gears.

The maximum travel speed (forward/reverse): 21.5 mph (34.6 km/h) and 7.2 mph (11.5 km/h). The closed center hydraulic system includes a piston pump with rated fluid flow of 30 gal/min (113.6 l/min). The hydraulic pressure is 206 bar (2990 psi). The Case IH MX 200 Magnum is equipped with a hydrostatic power steering, differential hydraulic wet disc brakes, 11.00x24 front tyres, and 18.4R46 rear tyres. The wheelbase is 120 in (3050 mm).

Engine Troubleshooting
Engine hard to start or won't start

Air in fuel system - Bleed fuel system.
Dirty fuel filter - Service the filter.
Fuel injection nozzles are damaged - Test injection nozzles and change if necessary.
Water in the fuel system - Change fuel and repair fuel system.
Valve clearance is out of adjustment - Check and adjust.
Fuel injection pump malfunction - Rebuild or change fuel pump.

Engine starts and stalls suddenly

Air filter is clogged - Air filter maintenance required.
Fuel filter element is clogged - Service the filter.
Fuel injection pump has loose connections - Tighten the connections.
Defective fuel injectors - Test and replace fuel injectors if necessary.
Fuel injection pump is broken - Change or repair the pump.

Engine stops running suddenly

Low coolant temperature - Warm up to required temperature.
Dirty fuel filter - Change the filter element.
Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Fuel injection nozzles are clogged or faulty - Inspect nozzles and replace if necessary.
Fuel injection pump timing is wrong - Adjust fuel injection pump as required.

Engine stops while idle

Wrong adjustment of low idle speed - Need to adjust idle speed.
Faulty fuel injection pump - Replacement or repair required.
Defective fuel injectors - Change or clean fuel injectors.
Valve out of adjustment - Adjust valve clearance.

Engine power is reduced

Plugged air cleaner - Carry out maintenance on air filter.
Faulty or dirty injection nozzles - Install a new kit of correctly balanced nozzles.
Uneven fuel injection pressure - Check the fuel injection pressure and adjust if necessary.
The valve clearance is incorrect - Adjust valve clearance according to specifications.
Incorrect low idle setting - Adjust low idling as recommended.
Dirty fuel lines or hoses - Clean fuel system lines and hoses.
Cylinder head gasket is blown - Cylinder-head gasket replacement required.
Piston rings are worn or defective - Piston rings need to be replaced.

Engine overheats

Lack of engine coolant - Add coolant and check the components of cooling system.
Engine oil level is insufficient - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Radiator fins are dirty or radiator cap is defective - Change cap or clean radiator.
Fan belt slipping or worn - Fan belt must be replaced.
Engine is under excessive load - Load reducing required.

Low oil pressure

Not enough oil in the engine - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Oil filter element is dirty - Change or clean engine oil filter element.
Improper type of engine oil - Use the specified type of engine oil.
Incorrect oil clearance in main bearing - Bearing replacement required.
Oil pump failure - Remove and inspect oil pump.

Engine noises or knocks

Low engine oil level - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Coolant temperature is low - Normalize the temperature by warming up the engine.
Improper setting of fuel injection pump timing - Check the fuel injection pump timing adjustment.
Wrong adjustment of low idle speed - Adjust the low idle speed.
Dirty or defective injectors - Change or clean fuel injectors.
Faulty or misaligned connecting rod - Connecting rod needs to be aligned or changed.
Pistons are broken or worn - Replace the pistons.

Transmission Troubleshooting
Insufficient transmission oil pressure

Low fluid level - Need to add transmission fluid.
Clogged transmission oil filter element (if fitted) - Clean or change transmission oil filter.
Relief valve is damaged - Change relief valve.

Transmission is making noise

Low oil level - Check transmission oil level and add oil as required.
Transmission fluid is contaminated - Transmission fluid change required.
Backlash is incorrect or gears are damaged - Install new gears and adjust backlash properly.
Bearings are broken or worn - Replace the bearings.
Worn or bent shift forks - Install new shift forks.
Shaft splines are damaged or worn - Change the shaft.

Hard shifting

Gear shift linkage is worn or rusty - Lubricate or replace the shift linkage.
Worn or bent gear shift forks - Change defective shift forks.
Gearshift mechanism malfunction - Identify and replace failed parts.
Worn or improperly adjusted clutch - Replace or adjust clutch.

Transmission oil leaking

Transmission fluid level is exceeded - Excess fluid must be drained.
Damaged seals or gaskets - Replace worn gaskets or seal.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting
Hydraulic oil pressure is insufficient

Low hydraulic fluid level - Add fluid as required.
Clogged hydraulic fluid filter - Clean or change hydraulic filter.
Hydraulic pump failure - Install a new hydraulic fluid pump.
Hydraulic spool valve is not set properly - Set the spool valve properly.
Hydraulic cylinder failure - Repair or install a new hydraulic cylinder.
Leaks in hydraulic lines - Find leaks in the system and fix it.

Hydraulics overheating

Main relief valve is damaged - Relief valve need to be replaced.
Hydraulic fluid type is wrong - Use correct type of hydraulic fluid.
Dirty hydraulic oil - The oil must be changed.
Air trapped in hydraulic system - Bleed air from system.

Hitch not raising or hitch raises slowly

Excessive hitch loading - Reduce hitch load.
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Add fluid as required.
Dirty hydraulic fluid filter element - Clean the hydraulic filter or install new filter element.
Hydraulic pump is defective - Repair or replace hydraulic oil pump.
Main relief valve is damaged - Install a new relief valve.
Hydraulic spool valve is faulty - Repair or replace hydraulic valve.
Hydraulic cylinder is faulty - Repair or replace hydraulic cylinder.
Loose or broken suction line - Tighten the pipe or replace it.

Hitch fails to drop or drops slowly

Incorrect setting hydraulic spool valve - Use the correct setting.
Hydraulic cylinder is broken - Repair or replace hydraulic cylinder.
The three-point hitch is not adjusted - The 3-point hitch must be adjusted.
Worn hitch rock shaft - Replace the shaft.

Jerky lowering or lifting of the hitch

Air in the hydraulic system - Air bleeding.
Hydraulic oil is contaminated - Fill up with fresh hydraulic oil.
Hydraulic pump not working - Repair or replace hydraulic oil pump.
Hydraulic control valve block is faulty - Replace or repair the valve.
Defective hydraulic cylinder - Repair or change hydraulic cylinder.

Steering System Troubleshooting
Steering wheel is very heavy to turn

Incorrectly assembled or damaged steering column - Reassemble the steering column correctly or change it.
Air in the hydraulic steering system - Bleed air from system.
Incorrect toe-in - Check toe-in and correct.
Front tyres are worn unevenly - Install new tyres.
Steering pump is worn - Repair or replace steering pump.
Worn or stuck pump flow control valve - Replace or clean flow control valve.
Steering fluid level is insufficient - Add oil to steering system.

Steering wheel free play is excessive

Worn steering column shaft or coupling - Replace faulty part.
Defective hydraulic steering pump - Replace or repair steering pump.
Worn or loose steering linkage joints - Repair or change steering linkage.

Tractor pulls to right or left

Front tyres are worn unevenly - Install new tyres.
Not adjusted toe-in - Check and adjust toe-in.
Worn or loose steering linkage assembly - Replace or repair steering linkage.
Incorrectly adjusted or damaged front wheel bearings - Adjust correctly or change bearings.

Electrical Troubleshooting
Battery will not charge

Corroded or loose cable connections - Service or tighten cable connections.
Electrical terminal connectors are defective - Terminal connectors should be replaced.
Battery faulty cell - Use a new battery.
Damaged or loose belt - Replace belt or adjust belt tension.

Starter motor cranks slow

Battery voltage is low - Battery is drained, recharge it.
Battery is not holding charge - Service charging system or change battery.
Wires are disconnected or battery terminals are corroded - Connect cables correctly or replace terminals.

Starter is not working

Battery is low or faulty - Replace or charge as required.
Wiring harness is disconnected or improperly connected - Check wiring harness and connect as required.
Battery voltage is low - Recharge the battery.
Starter motor is defective - Starter should be replaced.
