John Deere 2040S Troubleshooting

The John Deere 2040S is a 2-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive utility tractor. This model was manufactured between 1981 and 1987. The JD 2040S tractor is equipped with a John Deere 4-cycle four-cylinder diesel engine rated at 75 Hp (56 kW) and 3.90L (239.2 cubic inches) displacement.

The maximum torque is 238 Nm (175 lb-ft) at 1300 rpm. The transmission includes a dry disc clutch and partially synchronized gearbox with 8 forward and 4 reverse gears, or 16x8 two-speed powershift gearbox. Max. travel speed (forward and reverse): 18.9 mph (30.4 kph) / 8.4 mph (13.6 kph).

The closed center hydraulic system used a piston pump with rated capacity of 12.4 gal/min (47 l/min). The hydraulic pressure is 2465 psi (170 bar). The 2WD models are equipped with 10.0x16 front tires and 16.9x34 rear tires. The 13.6x24 front tires and 16.9x34 rear tires are used for 4WD tractors. The wheelbase is 90.2 inches (2290 mm).

Engine Troubleshooting
Engine doesn't start or hard to start
Clogged fuel filter element - Replace the filter element
No fuel injection - Open fuel cock to inject fuel
Water, dirt, or air in fuel system - Drain, flush, fill, and bleed system
Dirty or damaged injectors - Change fuel injectors
Fuel injection pump is damaged - Change or repair the pump
Low cylinder compression - Check and replace worn parts
Engine shuts off unexpectedly during operation
Engine is not fully warmed up - Normalize the temperature by warming up the engine
Air in fuel system - Air-bleed fuel system
Improper fuel injection - Fuel injection settings required
Clogged fuel filter element - Change the filter element
Dirty or faulty injectors - Clean or replace fuel injectors
Engine starts and immediately stalls
Fuel injection pump out of timing - Fuel pump timing settings need to be corrected
Clogged fuel filter element - Clean or replace the filter
Fuel injector nozzles are clogged or faulty - Inspect injector nozzles and change if required
Fuel injection pump is not working correctly - Change pump or rebuild it
Clogged air cleaner element - Service or change air cleaner
Engine stops at idle
Incorrectly set low idle speed - Adjust as required
Fuel injection pump failure - Rebuild or replace pump
Fuel injector nozzles are damaged - Service or replace injector nozzles
Improper valve clearance - Check and adjust
Engine overheating
Engine coolant is insufficient - Top up coolant fluid. If there are leaks in the system, replace worn components
Cooling system components are failed or system is clogged - Change faulty components or service cooling system
Lack of engine oil - Check and refill engine oil
Worn fan belt or improper belt tension - Adjust correctly or replace the belt
Thermostat failure - Check and change if necessary
Engine lacks power
Fuel injectors are defective or dirty - Inspect fuel injectors and replace if necessary
Fuel injection pressure is wrong - Repair or replace injection pump
Air filter clogging - Replace filter or install new filter element
Engine oil filter is plugged - Clean or replace engine oil filter element
Engine is overloaded - Load reducing is recommended
The valve clearance is not adjusted - Check and adjust as required
Incorrect low idle speed adjustment - Adjustment required
Dirt in the fuel pipes or hoses - Service fuel hoses and pipes
Engine compression too low: Leaking or broken valves - Valve replacement required
Abnormal engine noise or knocking
Incorrect setting of fuel injection pump timing - Fuel pump timing settings need to be corrected
Fuel injector nozzles are damaged - Change or clean injector nozzles
Lack of engine oil - Need to add engine oil
Engine is cold - Warm up the engine
Main bearings or crankshaft are worn out - Need to install new components
Worn or broken piston rings - Install new piston rings
Flywheel screws are loose - Tighten the screws firmly
Excessive oil consumption
Oil leakage: Gaskets or seals can be faulty - Defective components must be replaced
Wrong oil viscosity - Use oil of correct viscosity

Battery does not charge
Dead cell in battery - Battery change required
Damaged battery electrical wire harness - Inspect electrical wires for damage, change or repair
Corroded or loose cables and terminals - Clean or tighten cables and terminals
Defective belt or improperly adjusted belt tension - Replace belt or correctly adjust belt tension
Starter motor cranks slow
Low battery output voltage - Battery needs to be recharged
Battery will not hold charge - Service charging system or change battery
Battery wiring harness failure - Inspect electrical cables for defects, repair or replace
Corroded or loose terminals and cables - Clean or tighten cables and terminals
Starter will not crank
Low battery capacity - Battery needs to be recharged
Drained or faulty battery - Charge or change the battery
Starter motor is defective - Repair or change starter
Disconnected or incorrectly connected cables - Inspect battery cables and connect correctly

Transmission Troubleshooting
Hard shifting
Incorrectly adjusted or damaged clutch - Adjust correctly or replace
Stuck or damaged gear shift linkage - Service or change the shift linkage
Bent or worn shift forks - Replace the shift forks
Gearshift mechanism is worn out - Repair or replace worn components if required
Transmission fluid pressure is insufficient
Fluid level is low - Check transmission fluid level and add it as required
Transmission oil filter is plugged (if fitted) - Change or service the transmission oil filter
Relief valve sticking - Install a new valve
Transmission noises
Bearings are worn or damaged - Faulty bearings should be changed
Not enough oil in transmission - Correct the transmission oil level
Contaminated transmission oil - Fill up with fresh transmission oil
Backlash is incorrect or gears are worn - Replace gears or set backlash correctly
Damaged or worn shift forks - Install new shift forks

Hydraulics Troubleshooting
Hydraulic system overheated
Hydraulic system pressure is incorrect - Hydraulic pressure needs to be set correctly
Faulty or incorrectly adjusted main relief valve - Adjust relief valve or change if required
Hydraulic fluid is dirty - Hydraulic fluid change required
Aeration in hydraulic system - Check the pump seals, suction pipe, and fittings
Insufficient hydraulic fluid pressure
Lack of hydraulic oil - Fill up the hydraulic oil
Hydraulic oil filter element clogging - Service the hydraulic filter or change if required
Defective hydraulic pump - Check pump flow and install new pump if necessary
Hydraulic spool valve is not set properly or defective - Replace or adjust correctly
Hydraulic cylinder malfunction - Check cylinder components for wear or damage and change if necessary
Leakage in hydraulic lines - Find leaks in hydraulic system and repair it
Three-point hitch lifting is too slow or cannot be lifted
Lack of hydraulic oil - Fill up the hydraulic oil

Defective hydraulic cylinder - Inspect the hydraulic cylinder parts for damage or wear and replace if required
Lift arm shaft is worn - Replace the shaft
Defective mechanical parts of the hitch - Change worn or damaged hitch components
3-point hitch lift or lower is jerky
Air in hydraulic system - Inspect the pump seals, suction line, and fittings
Dirty hydraulic oil - The oil must be changed
Hydraulic pump is defective - Check pump performance and change it if necessary
Hydraulic spool valve is not set properly or defective - Adjust correctly or replace
Hydraulic cylinder is broken - Inspect cylinder parts for wear or damage and replace if required

Steering System Troubleshooting
Steering is hard
Steering column is defective or improperly assembled - Change steering column or assemble properly
Air leaks in steering system - Bleed air from system
Steering filter is clogged - Change steering filter element
Improper toe-in - Check toe-in and correct
Tire pressure is not correct - Check tire pressure and inflate as required
Steering pump is faulty - Steering pump needs to be repaired or replaced
Worn or defective hydrostatic/power steering unit - Repair or change the steering unit
Relief valve is worn or seized - Check relief valve and change if required
Steering oil insufficient - Check and refill steering oil
Oil leaks in the steering system - Retighten the connections of the hydraulic steering lines and hoses
Steering wheel free play is excessive
Steering column shaft or coupling has maximum wear - Change defective part
Hydrostatic/power has wear or damage - Repair or replace the steering unit
Worn steering pump - Replace or repair steering pump
Steering tie-rod ends or linkage are defective - Change failed part
Tractor pulls to left or right
Deflated front tyres - Inflate tyres as needed
Not adjusted toe-in - Check and adjust toe-in
Steering linkage or tie-rod ends are defective - Change damaged part
Hydrostatic/power steering unit is defective or worn - Inspect and change as required
Damaged steering cylinder - Replace or repair hydraulic steering cylinder
Front hub bearings are damaged or incorrectly adjusted - Install new bearings or adjust it correctly
