John Deere 1020 Troubleshooting

The John Deere 1020 is a 4x2 utility tractor from New Generation series. This model was manufactured between 1965 to 1973. The John Deere 1020 tractor is powered by 4-stroke 3-cylinder water-cooled naturally aspirated diesel engine. A 152 cubic inches (2.5 L) engine has a cylinder bore of 3.86" (98 mm), piston stroke of 3.86" (98 mm), and rated power of 40 hp (28.5 kW).

The John Deere 1020 was fitted with 3 types of transmission. 1st type: 8x4 Collar shift gear transmission. 2nd type: 16x8 two-speed power shift transmission. 3rd type: Power shuttle transmission with 8 forward and 4 reverse gears.

Max. travel speed (forward and reverse): 16.6 mph (26.7 km/h) / 9.5 mph (15.2 km/h). The closed center hydraulic system used a gear pump with a rated capacity of 10.5 gpm (39.7 lpm). The standard lift capacity is 2010 lbs (912 kg ) at lift pin. The JD 1020 tractor is fitted with 5.50x16 front tires and 13.6x28 rear tires. The wheel base is 74 in (1870 mm).

Diesel Engine Troubleshooting
Engine will not start or difficult to start
Clogged fuel filter element - Clean or change the filter
Fuel supply valve is closed - Open fuel supply valve
There is air in the fuel system - Bleed the system
Fuel injectors are damaged or dirty - Clean or replace fuel injectors
Faulty fuel injection pump - Install a new pump or rebuild
Engine has bad compression - Check cylinder block and replace defective parts
Engine stalls while running
Engine is not fully warmed up - Warm up the engine
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air
Fuel injection failed - Use correct settings
Dirty fuel filter element - Change filter element
Clogged fuel injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and replace if necessary
Diesel engine stops after starting
Timing of fuel injection pump is not adjusted - Check the fuel injection pump timing setting
Plugged fuel filter - Change filter element
Clogged or damaged injector nozzles - Service or replace injector nozzles
Fuel injection pump failure - Rebuild or replace pump
Air cleaner element is clogged - Clean or replace the air cleaner element
Engine stalls when idling
Too low idle RPM - Adjust the low idle speed
Fuel injection pump malfunction - Rebuild or change fuel pump
Damaged or clogged injector nozzles - Change injector nozzles
Valve clearance is out of adjustment - Adjust valve clearance
Engine overheats
Lack of engine coolant - Add the coolant. Check radiator and hoses for leaks
Cooling system parts are defective or system is clogged - Flush cooling system or replace faulty parts
Engine oil insufficient - Fill up the engine oil
Unadjusted fan belt tension or worn belt - Adjust belt tension correctly or replace it
Defective or wrong type of thermostat - Thermostat needs to be replaced
Engine power is reduced
Fuel injectors are clogged or faulty - Inspect fuel injectors and replace if necessary
Incorrect fuel injection pressure - Correct the pressure settings
Clogged air filter - Air filter maintenance required
Oil filter element is dirty - Clean or change engine oil filter
Engine is under excessive load - Load reducing is recommended
Valve clearance is not correct - Correct valve clearance
Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Normalize low idle speed
Dirt in the hoses or pipes - Clean fuel hoses and pipes
Engine low compression: Leaking or faulty valves - Replace the valves as required
Abnormal engine knocking or noise
Timing of fuel injection pump is wrong - Adjust the fuel injection pump timing correctly
Fuel injector nozzles are dirty or defective - Test injector nozzles and replace as required
Insufficient engine oil - Check and refill engine oil
Engine is not preheated - Warm up to required temperature
Worn main bearings or crankshaft - Replace crankshaft or bearings
Piston rings are worn or broken - Replace piston rings
Flywheel screws are loose - Tighten the screws firmly
Engine using too much oil
External oil leaks: Damaged gaskets or seals - Defective components must be replaced
Incorrect oil viscosity - Use proper viscosity oil
Worn or stuck piston rings - Replace piston rings
Valve stems and guides are worn - Need to replace the valves
Pistons or cylinder liners are scuffed - Inspect liners and pistons, change as necessary

Electrical System Troubleshooting
Battery cannot be charged
Worn-out battery - Battery change required
Battery wiring harness damage - Inspect battery wiring for damage, replace or repair
Corroded or loose battery terminals and cables - Tighten or service terminals and cables
Belt slipping or wrong belt tension adjustment - Change belt or properly adjust belt tension
Starter turns slow
Low battery capacity - Battery is drained, charge it
Battery will not hold charge - Service or change the battery
Battery electrical wire harness damage - Check battery wires for damage, replace or change
Corroded or loose battery cables and terminals - Service or tighten battery terminals and cables
Starter motor won't turn
Low battery power - Low battery charging, charge as required
Drained or worn battery - Recharge or change battery
Damaged starter motor - Starter should be replaced
Disconnected or incorrectly connected wiring harness - Inspect wiring harness and reconnect it as required

Transmission Troubleshooting
Gears are hard to shift
Clutch is unadjusted or worn - Adjust clutch or replace if required
Gear shift linkage is stuck or damaged - Replace or repair the shift linkage
Damaged or worn shift forks - Shift forks need to be replaced
Defective gearshift mechanism - Replace defective components
Insufficient transmission oil pressure
Insufficient fluid supply - Fill the transmission housing with fluid
Transmission fluid filter clogging (if fitted) - Change or service the transmission fluid filter
Damaged relief valve - Install a new valve
Transmission is excessively noisy
Bearings are worn or damaged - Install new bearings
Insufficient oil supply - Fill up the transmission oil
Dirty transmission fluid - Transmission fluid must be changed
Damaged gears or improper backlash - Replace gears or set backlash properly
Damaged or worn shift forks - Shift forks need to be replaced
Transmission oil leaks
Broken gaskets or seals - Seals and gaskets need to be replaced
Transmission housing is cracked - Replace housing or transmission assembly

Hydraulics Troubleshooting
Excessive hydraulic system heat
Improper pressure in hydraulic system - Adjust properly
Main relief valve is defective or unadjusted - Adjust relief valve or change if required
Contaminated hydraulic oil - Change hydraulic oil
Aeration in hydraulic system - Inspect the suction pipe, fittings, and pump seals
Hydraulic oil pressure too low
Not enough hydraulic oil in the system - Fill up the hydraulic oil
Hydraulic fluid filter is clogged - Clean the hydraulic filter or install new filter element
Hydraulic pump not working - Test the pump flow rate and install new pump if required
Hydraulic spool valve block is defective or set improper - Adjust properly or replace
Hydraulic cylinder is not working - Check the hydraulic cylinder components for damage or wear and change if necessary
Hydraulic lines are leaking - Inspect hydraulic system for leaks and repair it
3-point hitch does not raise or raises very slowly
Not enough hydraulic oil in the system - Fill the hydraulic system with oil
Cold hydraulic fluid - Warm up the fluid

Suction pipe is broken or loose - Tighten the pipe or replace it
3-point hitch fails to drop or drops slowly
Hydraulic control valve is not set properly or defective - Adjust properly or change
Hydraulic cylinder is defective - Check cylinder components for wear or damage and change if necessary
Hitch rock shaft is damaged - Change the shaft
Internal mechanical failure of the hitch - Replace defective or worn hitch components
Hitch lower or lift is jerky
Air trapped in the hydraulic system - Inspect the pump seals, suction pipe, and fittings
Hydraulic oil contamination - Change the oil
Hydraulic pump failure - Check pump flow and install new pump if necessary
Hydraulic control valve block is defective or set improper - Change or adjust correctly
Broken hydraulic cylinder - Inspect cylinder components for wear or damage and change if required

Steering System Troubleshooting
Excessive effort to steer
Worn or improperly mounted steering column - Mount the steering column properly or change it
Air leaks in steering system - Bleed air from system
Not adjusted toe-in - Adjust toe-in properly
Tire pressure is low - Tires need to be inflated
Steering pump malfunction - Install a new hydraulic steering pump
Faulty steering gear box parts - Replace defective components of power steering gearbox
Not enough steering oil - Check oil level and add steering oil as required
Steering system oil leakage - Tighten the steering hose and line joints
Excessive steering wheel play
Worn steering column coupling or shaft - Change defective part
Faulty steering gear box components - Repair power steering gearbox
Steering pump not working - Install a new hydraulic steering pump
Steering linkage or tie-rod ends are defective - Change damaged part
Front wheels wander to right or left
Incorrect tire pressure - Inflate the tires correctly
