Kubota L2900 Troubleshooting

The Kubota L2900 is a Grand L-series compact utility tractor. This model was manufactured from 1994 to 1999. The L2900 tractor is powered by Kubota D1503 4-cycle vertical three-cylinder water-cooled diesel engine with max. output power of 30.5 (22.8) Hp and 90 Nm (67 lb-ft) of max torque at 2300 rev/min.

The Kubota L2900 fitted with 2 transmission options: 8x8 synchronized shuttle transmission, or power shuttle GST transmission with 8 forward and 8 reverse gears. Max. forward speed - 15.3 mph (24.6 kph), maximum reverse speed - 14.1 mph (22.7 kph).

The open center hydraulic system includes a gear pump with fluid flow rate of 7 gallons per minute (26.5 l/min). The hydraulic pressure is 2490 psi (172 bar). The 2WD models are equipped with 5.00x15 front tires and 11.2x24 rear tires. The 7.20x16 front tires and 11.2x24 rear tires are used for 4WD tractors. The wheel base is 65.9" (1670 mm) for 2-wheel drive models and 65.7" (1660 mm) for 4-wheel drive models. The L2900 tractor can be equipped with the following attachments: Kubota RC72-29 mower deck, Kubota LA481 front end loader, and Kubota BL4690 backhoe.

Engine Troubleshooting
Engine will not start or starts up hard
Fuel filter is clogged - Install new filter element
Fuel shut-off valve closed - Open the fuel shut-off valve
Fuel lines leaking air - Tighten clamps, change faulty pipes
Dirty or faulty injectors - Service or change fuel injectors
Fuel injection pump is damaged - Replace or repair injection pump
Low cylinder compression - Check cylinder block and replace worn parts
Diesel stalls while running
Coolant temperature is low - Warm up to required temperature
Air in fuel lines - Bleed fuel lines
Fuel injection failed - Use correct settings
Fuel filter clogging - Clean the filter element
Fuel injectors are clogged or faulty - Service or change fuel injectors
Diesel engine stalls after starting
Incorrectly set fuel injection pump timing - Check and correct adjustments
Fuel filter plugging - Change the filter element
Fuel injector nozzles are damaged - Install new set of properly balanced nozzles
Fuel injection pump is not operating properly - Install a new fuel pump or repair
Clogged air cleaner - Install new cleaner element or replace it
Engine stalls while idling
Too low idle RPM - Test and adjust
Faulty fuel injection pump - Change pump or rebuild it
Damaged or clogged injector nozzles - Install a new set of well-balanced nozzles
Valve clearance is not correct - Adjust valve clearance
Engine overheated
Not enough coolant - Fill cooling system to proper level. Check for coolant leaks
Cooling system components are failed or system is clogged - Service the cooling system or replace faulty components
Insufficient engine oil - Fill up the engine oil
Fan belt tension is improper or belt is damaged - Adjust belt tension correctly or change it
Thermostat malfunction - Check and replace if required
Engine lacks power
Faulty or dirty injectors - Test fuel injectors and change if necessary
Insufficient fuel injection pressure - Correct the pressure settings
Air filter clogging - Service or change air filter
Oil filter is dirty - Service or change engine oil filter element
Engine overloaded - Reduce load on the engine
Valve clearance is out of adjustment - Adjustment procedure required
Incorrect low idle setting - Adjust low idle speed
Fuel pipes or hoses are dirty - Clean fuel hoses and pipes
Insufficient engine compression: Valves are damaged or leaking - Valves need to be replaced
Engine noise or knocking
Incorrect setting of fuel injection pump timing - Check and correct adjustments
Fuel injector nozzles fault - Inspect injector nozzles and change if required
Engine oil insufficient - Fill up the oil to required level
Engine is not fully warmed up - Warm up the engine
Crankshaft or main bearings failure - Change defective components as required
Defective or broken piston rings - Piston rings need to be replaced
Loose flywheel bolts - Check flywheel bolts and tighten properly
Engine using too much oil
External oil leaks: Seals or gaskets are defective - New components need to be installed
Incorrect oil viscosity - Use oil of correct viscosity
Damaged or seized piston rings - Change the piston rings as required
Valve guides and stems are worn - Valves need to be changed
Scuffed cylinder liners or pistons - Check liners and pistons, change as required


Electrical System Troubleshooting
Battery does not charge
Battery failing - Replace the battery
Battery wiring harness failure - Inspect electrical cables for defects, repair or replace
Corroded or loose battery terminals and cables - Tighten or service terminals and cables
Incorrect belt tension adjustment or worn belt - Adjust belt tension properly or replace belt
Starter motor turns slow
Low battery output - Recharge the battery
Battery runs out quickly - Service or replace the battery
Battery wiring harness failure - Inspect electrical cables for defects, repair or replace
Loose or corroded battery terminals and cables - Cables and terminals must be tightened or cleaned
Starter is not working
Battery capacity is low - Battery is drained, charge it
Drained or worn battery - Charge or replace the battery
Starter motor is defective - Starter should be changed
Disconnected or incorrectly connected cables - Inspect battery cables and connect correctly

Transmission Troubleshooting
Gears are hard to shift
Worn or misadjusted clutch - Replace or adjust clutch
Gear shift linkage is stuck or worn - Repair or change shift linkage
Worn or damaged shift forks - Replace the shift forks
Gear shifting mechanism is worn - Change worn components
Low transmission pressure
Lack of transmission fluid supply - Fill up the transmission fluid
Clogged transmission oil filter (if equipped) - Replace or service transmission oil filter
Damaged relief valve - Replace valve as required
Transmission makes noise
Bearings are worn or broken - Faulty bearings should be replaced
Oil level is insufficient - Fill the transmission housing to proper oil level
Transmission fluid contamination - Change transmission fluid
Damaged gears or improper backlash - Set backlash correctly or change the gears
Bent or worn shift forks - Install new shift forks
External oil leaks
Gaskets or seals are broken - Install new components
Cracked transmission housing - Housing needs to be replaced


Hydraulics Troubleshooting
Excessive hydraulic system heat
Hydraulic system pressure is not adjusted correctly - Correct adjustment is required
Misadjusted or defective main relief valve - Adjust relief valve or change if required
Hydraulic oil is contaminated - Fill up with fresh hydraulic oil
Air leaks in hydraulic system - Check the pump seals, suction pipe, and fittings
Low hydraulic system pressure
Hydraulic fluid level is insufficient - Check and refill the hydraulic fluid
Hydraulic fluid filter element is dirty - Service the hydraulic filter or change if required
Damaged hydraulic oil pump - Check pump capacity and change if necessary
Hydraulic spool valve is not set properly or defective - Set properly or replace
Defective hydraulic cylinder - Check cylinder parts for wear or damage and replace if necessary
Leakage in hydraulic lines - Identify leaks in the system and repair it
3-point hitch lifts slowly or won't lift
Lack of hydraulic fluid - Add fluid to the hydraulic system
Cold hydraulic fluid - Warm up the fluid
Hydraulic oil filter element is dirty - Clean or replace the hydraulic filter
Hydraulic pump is faulty - Test pump flow rate and replace pump if required
Main relief valve incorrect adjustment or failure - Adjust or change relief valve

3-point hitch fails to drop or drops slowly

Defective hydraulic cylinder - Check cylinder components for wear or damage and change if necessary
Lift arm shaft is damaged - Install a new shaft
Mechanical parts of the hitch are damaged - Replace damaged or worn hitch parts
Jerky lowering or lifting of the hitch
Aeration in hydraulic system - Inspect the suction line, pump seals, and fittings
Dirty hydraulic oil - The oil must be changed
Hydraulic pump is faulty - Test pump performance and replace pump if necessary
Damaged or incorrect adjusted hydraulic control valve - Change or set correctly
Hydraulic cylinder is not working - Check cylinder parts for damage or wear and replace if necessary

Steering System Troubleshooting
Excessive effort to steer
Defective or incorrectly installed steering column - Reinstall the steering column or change it
Aeration in steering system - Bleed air from system
Improper toe-in adjustment - Check toe-in and correct
Tire pressure is improper - Inflate the tires properly
Steering pump not working - Replace or repair steering pump
Damaged or worn hydrostatic steering unit - Inspect and change as required
Relief valve is seized or faulty - Replace or install new relief valve
Low steering oil level - Fill up the steering oil
Steering system oil leak - Retighten joints of the hydraulic steering pipes and hoses
Excessive steering wheel play
Worn steering column coupling or shaft - Change faulty component
Damaged or worn hydrostatic steering unit - Replace or repair steering unit as required
Hydraulic steering pump is defective - Install a new steering pump
Steering tie-rod ends or linkage are worn - Replace damaged part
Tractor is pulling to right or left
Incorrect tire pressure - Inflate the tires correctly
Toe-in adjustment is incorrect - Adjust toe-in properly
Steering linkage or tie-rod ends are worn - Change failed part
Hydrostatic steering unit is defective or worn - Replace or repair steering unit as required
Steering cylinder is damaged - Repair or change steering cylinder
Damaged or improperly adjusted or worn front hub bearings - Adjust correctly or replace bearings
